Malnutrition And Joints

The title of Malnutrition is often associated with under-eating (eating little amounts) of food. This is true in the strictest sense and results in weight loss in prolonged and sustained food intake restriction.

However, in some instances a person may be eating enough calories in order to maintain their weight, but the body still would not take up what it requires in forms of various nutrients that are vital for its optimal functioning. Indeed, this tends to occur due to either a non-varied diet, or because the digestive system struggles to absorb these nutrients even if available, which often happens as a result of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Coeliac Disease. Therefore, if not diagnosed and properly managed, IBS could lead to joint pains and overall weakening of them.

How Malnutrition Can Affect Joints?

Joints are complex structures that rely on a variety of nutrients to function properly. When people are malnourished, they may not be getting or absorbing enough of these essential nutrients. This can lead to a number of joint problems, including:

  • Joint pain. Malnutrition can weaken joint cartilage and make joints more susceptible to injury and pain
  • Another is Osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease that is characterised by the breakdown of joint cartilage. Malnutrition can increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis and make the symptoms worse
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. Malnutrition can worsen the inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis

If you have any joint pain or other concerns about your joint health, talk to your doctor. They can help you to identify the underlying cause of your pain and develop a treatment plan, and we would be glad to assist.
